Raking is a method of picking locks that doesn’t require setting pins one at a time. Raking is a technique in which a special lock pick called a rake is used to push multiple pins at a time above the sheer line. If used properly, raking can open a cheap lock in a few seconds. For the better made locks, however, raking is not as reliable since it is more random than setting pins one at a time.
A basic use for a rake is to insert it all the way back into the lock, and removing it rapidly while applying upward force. The idea is that the force will cause the top pins to jump and set above the sheer line, opening the lock. However, the bottom pins will jump as well. If you apply too much pressure with the tension wrench, the bottom pins will set, so it is important to only apply slight pressure. This method works really well for cheap locks, but not so well for the more expensive types.
